Are You Around Toxic People? Five Traits That Signal You Should Run Away

We all have been surrounded by toxic people at one point in our lives, sometimes without even noticing it. In order to live a peaceful and successful life, we should surround ourselves with the right people. In fact, this is common advice from most leaders and mentors I ‘ve ever encountered: “If you want to know who you are, look at the five closest people around you”.  Are you hanging around with people who share your same thoughts, values and contribute to your life in a positive way? Or do you just accept anybody that crosses into your path?

Toxic people have bad intentions. They might come across as friendly and nice on the outside, but on the inside, they struggle to feel happy for others, and really just care about themselves. Unfortunately, those people will always get in the way when you are trying to accomplish something positive in your life.

Toxic people can cause detrimental effects in our life if we do not learn to detect them and do something about it; there is enough evidence from research around the world that confirm that toxic relationships are harmful to your health; they increase the risk of metabolism disorders, chronic stress, heart diseases, cardiovascular issues and even depression. The influence of toxic people can be very subtle, so it is imperative to learn to detect those in your life and get away from them.

So, how can you be sure that someone around you is being a toxic person? Let’s take a look at the top traits:

1.     They are the victims

Everything negative that happens to you is because “you deserve it”, but if something happens to them is a tragedy. They are the “poor me”, in every situation.

2.     They love gossip and scandal

Toxic people feed themselves with negative news and gossip. Those are the first to know when something bad happens to another person. They like to be surrounded by people not doing well in their lives and therefore will try to impede that you get better or are improving in your life.

3.     They are always right and never ask for forgiveness

They think that they are smarter than you, and everything they do is righteous and flawless. If something goes wrong is your fault, they are just the victims. These people do not feel any regret for causing damage to others because they think “they deserved it”.

4.     They attack you the moment you share the good news with them

It might be something very subtle like saying to you “Yes sounds great, but…” The moment they say a “but” it means that they are contradicting you or pointing out that you are wrong or something might not go as expected. They like to impose fear on you to make you feel doubtful about your decision, that is why they are “experts” in seeing all the risks in everything you do.

5. They drain your energy

Have you experienced an energy drop, irritability, uneasiness or even got a headache after speaking with someone?

That would be a clear signal of very negative energy attacking your immune system. Believe it or not, negative energies, once they can connect with the other person’s energy, can cause debilitation of our immune system. Negative emotions suppress the function of our prefrontal cortex and activate the amygdala, the area of the brain that deals with the “fight or flight” protective mechanism.

In short, if you notice that people close to you have three or more of the traits mentioned above, better run away. Sometimes this might be hard because oftentimes those people are our partners, our parents or even our own children. However, regardless of the personal relationship, there is no justification to tolerate toxic behaviours for the sake of their well-being, putting yours at risk.

Form a circle of people that do care about you. Who show respect and love for what you do. Humanity is a big family, whether we are connected by blood, by soul or both. Select carefully your herd and strive!

¿Qué Es Lo Que Importa En La Vida?

How to Keep Calm in Times of Chaos

If you watch the mainstream media regularly, you might think that the world is on the verge to collapse. The third world war is about to take place, inflation is skyrocketing, and social unrest is high in most of the world.

Most decent people believe that inherently their governments are good. This is especially true in places like Europe, where you get raised with a strong influence to obey your superiors and trust the authorities. Europeans from the West brag about having an independent strong middle class, with low inequality in terms of income. But behind the scenes, the real manipulation happens already during childhood time. Fascist states like Germany for example could put parents in jail if they do not send their children to public schools. You get finger-pointed if your kid is crying in a public restaurant, because, how dare he?

There are very few awakened people in the world. People who can see beyond what is presented to them on fake screens. People that like to think for themselves, to question and challenge the status quo. But those people pay a high price for being authentic.

Societies today are very much hypocritical about almost any topic. Let’s pick one. These last few days, we have seen with quite some shock the huge manifestations in Iran of women against their religious rules (for example, wearing a hijab or showing more of their bodies publicly). From one day to the next, thousands of women organized to protest country-wide about their rights not to wear it and not to follow their religious beliefs in general.

Meanwhile, in Europe, there are hundreds of ads in different central spots in major European cities like Paris, Rome, Stockholm, etc. where the European Union openly supports the use of the hijab and even considers it as part of diversity and inclusion. This is a clear message: In Iran, you damage your culture the most if you go against religious beliefs and practices. In Europe, you damage your national heritage the most when you let all kinds of people come and impose their religious views and ways of living.  It is clear that those manifestations are paid for and organized to reach social unrest.

Now you might ask, how would knowing this give me any peace?

I totally feel you. To stay calm and maintain a peaceful state of mind despite the many atrocities happening in the world today, is not an easy task. This might be one of those pieces of history in our civilization where we have been so distressed that it qualifies as a turning point in our times.

But even if it seems impossible, even if you might feel anxious and depressed about the future, there are ways to keep your peaceful state of mind. I can share with you a couple of tricks to gain back your peaceful mental state that has helped me and I hope they can help you too:

·      Turn off the TV and social media channels for a while

If you are one of those who as soon as they wake up are already with your fingertips reaching that news app on your iPhone or going first thing in the morning to turn on the morning news channel, then my friend, you have to give up that habit.

If you do this for two days in a row, you will realize that most of the negativity about the state of the world is coming precisely from the news channels. We believe that watching the news keeps us informed about the world, but this is naïve thinking. Major media news are being paid to bring specific storylines which benefit the ones that pay for them to get streamed.

Look at who sponsors your favourite TV channels and social media apps and I tell you who is dictating to you what you should believe as the truth.

·      Make exercise outdoors regularly

Doing sports outdoors is an antidepressant by excellence. Even if you just go for a 20 minute walk a day already puts you in a calmer mental state and makes you feel much better than laying around on the sofa or sitting at your desk.

·      Eat a high- good quality fat diet. Reduce carbs

We have the wrong conception of high-fat diets.  For many decades, doctors, nutritionists and society, in general, have demonized the consumption of foods with high cholesterol profiles like eggs, cheese, meat, olive oils and nuts. The food industry profits more making you believe that a diet mainly based on cereals is more nutritious and gives you more energy.

But this is entirely wrong. It has been proven by many doctors around the world, one of the most prominent being Dr. David Perlmutter, that one of the leading causes of neurodegenerative diseases, obesity and anxiety are mainly dietary. That means, what we are eating has much more impact on our health and our brain than we think. He found out after extensive research that numerous neurological afflictions are related to too much consumption of carbs and too few healthy fats. Fat has always been a fundamental pillar of our diets even from ancestral times. Try it out: Restrain your cereals and sugar consumption and increase your consumption of eggs, meat, fish, nuts, coconut and olive oil. You will gain more energy, feel better, sleep better and get a sharper memory. If you want to know more about this topic, I recommend you to get Dr. Perlmutter’s book Grain Brain.

·      Keep focused on your own goals

In a world filled with terror, wars, crisis and instability, it is difficult not to feel depressed and frustrated about it. We feel incompetent and so small, and unable to solve the imminent third world war, the pandemics, the gas crisis and climate change, and whatever else new crisis gets announced on the TV.

It is true, we cannot change what the media, politicians and big industries want to impose on us. But we can do something about our own lives. We have the power of choice and free will. You can choose to ignore the media. You can choose to focus on your goals, despite the negative outlooks. You can choose to do everything you can to keep this world as a still livable place to be as we can. A place you would feel proud to leave to your children.

By ignoring the media and making your own conscious choices, you will realize that the world is not as bad as you think. You can still achieve your goals, realize your dreams and meet great people. We do not have to be politicized and divided. We can also act as a united community, striving to make our best, to the best of our capabilities, in this beautiful world.

The bigger spheres of “Power” might be led by lunatics and psychopaths, but we could take away that power from them: By ignoring them, and by developing our own thinking. Be the architect of your life and do not let them do that for you.

Believe me, once you take full ownership of your thoughts and actions, you will gain peace of mind as you had never before.

Let’s Talk About Mental Health

You might often hear that “No news is good news” but it isn’t the case when we talk about recognizing mental health disorders. Those tend to be silent witnesses. People that suffer from depression and anxiety do not recognize so quickly that something is wrong inside of them until it explodes and manifest as external acts of aggression, sadness and suicidal thoughts.

What can we do to become more aware of it? Can we do something about it?

It is one of the deepest mysteries of human nature: with our thinking faculties and our capabilities to become over-conscious about life together with the speed of events happening around us, it is becoming more and more difficult to grasp and take back our ability to control our minds and our emotions.

I believe we have been losing our capability to become more resilient in difficult times. The progressive agendas in the era of hyper-industrialized and full-speed technological world is letting behind our human capacity to cope with difficult situations. It is simply too much for our brains to process and digest the vast amounts of information being received everyday by the little device we carry with us every single day.

The era of hyper-connectivity in all areas of our life is threatening our inner desire to be part of a small community. Slowly and dangerously, vast online network communities are replacing real personal connections. Some decades ago, it was unthinkable to have multiple contacts with vast amounts of people. Only our neighbours, school colleagues and family were the people we really had contact with. Now you are a click away from vast amounts of people in the social media world. But is this better? Is this an advancement towards a better and smarter civilization?

In many ways, it seems like it is. In the digital era, you can have everything available at your fingertips. On the other side, we train less our capability to be patient, to wait for proper and real human interaction. We become obsessed with superficial “likes” and attention, that lasts maybe a few seconds before the new feed shows you something new.

I believe that the increasing levels of anxiety and depression are a direct consequence of the new digital world that is being pushed towards us with high speed and which is not our natural human way of living. Therefore, it is important to take a step back and reflect on how much this hyper-connectivity to the online world is harming your mental health.

I propose these simple but powerful steps to reflect and gain back some critical thinking about how to use the online world more consciously:

  • Recognize that you have an addiction to your mobile phone

It is a well-known fact that smartphone overuse is as addictive as any other drug. The apps we tend to use for social media interaction and other activities like shopping, gaming, etc. are designed to keep your attention as long as possible and as frequent as possible. Therefore, once you start to depend on the use of your smartphone for your daily activities, the higher the likelihood you will develop an addiction to it.

A well sound advice would be to go back to the old times when you just used your phone for making calls and use your laptop for everything else.  Delete the apps that you know cause distraction. Try to stay a day or two smartphone free. You will realize that is not the end of the world- you will actually feel more calm and more relaxed!

  • Make an effort to connect with your local community and meet your friends in person

Do you remember when you used to call a friend by phone and just talk for hours? Or go for a walk in the park, buy some ice cream and sit on a bench to observe people and have long conversations? Nothing the online world offers is more gratifying than that. A quick “like” or quick byline message gets lost in the enormous amount of info trash.

Go out, meet your friends, have some drinks and have fun the old-style!

  • Do walks in the nature, swim in the sea or in a lake nearby

Direct contact with nature is a wonderful and natural anti-depressant. Just try it out- walk in a park barefoot and hug a tree. Close your eyes and see how this connection brings you a calming influence. Enough exposure to sunlight is a wonderful antidote against depression.

  • Turn off the Wifi before going to sleep

Good sleep is key to maintaining a balanced and healthy mood. The increasing use of Wifi and the electromagnetic radiation soup to which we are exposed daily have negative consequences on our overall health, according to recent studies. Among the side effects of being exposed to EMF (Microwave electromagnetic frequencies) includes “oxidative stress, sperm/testicular damage, neuropsychiatric effects including EEG changes, apoptosis, cellular DNA damage, endocrine changes, and calcium overload”…

So, it is wise to avoid very long exposures to any place with strong wifi signals (be aware of 5G antennas!) and especially before going to sleep, turn off your wifi router.

  • Talk about it and ask for help

I know it is very hard to talk to people when you feel down. If anything, we try to avoid people and feel like staying home watching tv at best. And sometimes that helps. But when you realize that you are feeling more and more down, it is time to reach out for help.

Talk to a counsellor, therapist, or a close friend. Dostoyevsky used to say “I like being alone, but I don’t like feeling lonely”. There is a difference between having time alone for reflection and peace of mind and thinking you are alone against the world.

The Armored Man

I have seen you in front of a mirrow, Armored Man

why are you so afraid?

Why do you move so rigidly?

I try to look into your eyes, but you don’t want to look at me,

you see me and lower your sight;

Are you afraid of me?

Are you afraid of what you will see through my eyes?

I guess you are, Armored Man.

You will see yourself, reflected.

The other day I tried to talk to you,

but you rolled your eyes and walked away;

You don’t want to listen,

it’s impossible to have a conversation with you,

you have eyes to see and ears to hear

but you refuse to use them;

You want to remind blind to your own realities.

Armored Man, why are you so afraid of the truth?

 You cherish the courageous, but refuse to take action;

You blame and judge others,

but are uncapable to see your own misery.

Armored Man, your life is so small inside that armor

you can barely walk straight

there is so much heavy weight to carry on…

Armored Man,

you dream about Life,

but are unable to live Life.

Why are you so afraid?

Why do you want to remain hidden?

You cannot escape Life, Armored Man

it’s time to face it;

Take out your heavy armor,

and open your heart,

feel the living force inside,

and let it run free!

I have seen you in front of a mirror, Armored Man.

Paola Knecht- February 2022

I’d rather be crazy….

and happy, than being normal and boring.

That was the thought that crossed my mind while I passed by a bus stop and observed how people were looking at me in a sort of disbelief: It was snowing, minus two degrees, very early in the morning and this lady is running and smiling like crazy in her jogger pants, with just a small sweater and no wearing any hand-gloves, no mask, no scarf. I passed them, feeling like a flake of snow, all light and easy, while they were all heavily covered up, from head to toes, umbrella included, mask on, all squeezed under the small glass ceiling of the bus stop cabinet.

I know, maybe I am a little crazy. But I am a hard-core jogger and I love to go out for a jog regardless of the weather. It just makes my heart sing.

The whole experience made me reflect of how blessed crazy people is. They are beyond any sort of judgment. They freely express themselves; they dance in the rain, scream in the forest, laugh until it hurts, display the life latent inside of them.

“Normal” people follow rules. They are afraid of getting wet. They don’t smile to strangers. They prefer to be quiet and behave well. Seems like you need to shake them to take out a bit of life. … “hey life, are you there??”

Normal nowadays is the life sentence of boredom.

In our attempt to be civilized, we forget to enjoy.

I sometimes wonder, how would this world look like, if everybody would just be themselves, plain and simple? No wannabes or wannahaves. No titles to defend; no image to protect.

I think it would be a fantastic world. A world worth living.

We think we are a free society, but maybe we don´t have any idea of what real freedom is.

I don´t remember having a single day where I do not have to think about being myself without breaking any “rule”. Here in Europe, the word “forbidden” is the most common you see on the streets. Oh boy, how governments love that phrase.

“Forbidden to pass this street. Forbidden to smoke here. Forbidden to sit there. Forbidden to not wear a mask. Forbidden the access to pets. Forbidden to…. breathe? I think we are close to that.

Civilization and it’s obsession with law and order had converted people in domesticated pets.

Don’t get me wrong; I do believe a civilized behavior is necessary to keep peace; but not at the expense of suppressing the joy of the self; the joy of living.

We call people “crazy” when they behave “not in line” with an expected behavior. Maybe that person does not follow the rules; shows too much emotion in public; maybe they act more euphorically, they do not follow any expectations. Crazy people live in their own world; their happiness is generated in the inside.

Many people confuse “crazy” with mentally “ill”. Mentally-ill people cannot control their emotions. They act in a “primitive” fashion. They are dangerous for society. Or so they claim.

I think we do not have yet an understanding of what makes people “mentally-ill”. Researchers, doctors and the medical institutions often refer the mentally illness problem as a “genetical disorder”- a failure of your genes. An error of nature.

Wait a minute… can nature be mistaken? Can nature have errors?

I’m not so sure about that. I think we “humans” create the errors. We produce all sorts of trash like synthetic chemicals, all sorts of pollutants and alter nature modifying our food and our genes in our attempt to “understand” and “improve” nature, and our arrogance makes us believe that nature can be wrong and we can correct it.

Maybe the genetical malfunctions have anything to do with it?

Call me crazy, but I believe that nature is perfect, is marvelous, sublime and supreme beyond our comprehension. God is a perfect designer.

I recognize the technological and scientific advances that have enabled our civilizations to flourish, but do we really understand at the extent of what? What is the price we are paying?

Are we happier, healthier, and mentally stronger?

If a small viral flu created such a worldwide drama, shutting down our life as we knew it, for the sake of saving a few lives…. I don´t think so.

Just look at this world statistics: as of today:

Ca. 137,000 people died of a seasonal flu this year

Ca. 780,485,000 people are obese and ca. 1.8 billion people have overweight

Ca, 3,000,000 tons of toxic chemicals are released this year

Ca. 12 billion cigarretes are being smoked (today!)

Ca. 3,000,000 people died of cancer this year

(…)

I’m not a fan of statistics because I don’t believe, as a scientist myself, that there is a trustable base to count with clear rules. But at least statistics help us a little bit to put the world into context, parting from the belief that the rules are defined with the best possible knowledge we have.

We have for sure far bigger problems to solve as humanity than a seasonal flu pandemic, but we, the “normal people”, either decide to consciously ignore it and go with the flow, or maybe is just plain and simple ignorance?

I wonder who is really mentally ill now…

In a world full of normal people, I prefer to be the crazy one. I prefer to question, to challenge the status quo, to go out there and live fully.

I chose to trust nature, to trust my body and it’s self-healing capabilities… to trust LIFE.

This is the only chance we have to live it… so why to deny it’s right?

The Myth of Work-Life Balance

Ohh yes! come to me, work-life balance. The mantra we hear over and over again. Everybody that has corporate, industrious kind of job, knows that this is some sort of aspiring living style… a promised land of balance, prosperity and well-being.

Where does this idea came from? Although it appears to be New Age, the reality is that it is a concept that already was used as back as in the late 1800s. At the time, this movement was mainly targeted for women as a way to integrate them into the labor force. Women’s role as primary caretakers of children and home was still the norm, and so in order for them to join the workforce more flexible schedules and maternity leave schemes were needed (ncbi.gov).

Nowadays, the work-life balance concept is applied by professional men and women in general, with exception of some “critical” professions like doctors, nurses and other jobs which need constant permanence due to it’s life critical nature. The idea to have a work-life balance holds the key belief that working only a limited permissible amount of hours and not more, will allow you to have more time for family and leisure; at the same time, it will increase productivity, job satisfaction, and an overall reach of higher levels of well-being.

In the late 20th century, the so-called work-life balance transformed itself from a nice intended concept to gain more “flexible” work hours, to a multi-million dollar industry. Now you can have all kinds of services that help you reach this goal: consulting companies, coaches, online programs, health courses, and all other sorts of products.

But what is really behind the idea of having a balanced work-life? Why to separate the “work” and the “life” as if they were different entities? If you are working, then you are not living?

Something behind this idea is a bit bogus.

I believe that when you have a job that you enjoy, that you love, you are living it. Our life is a continuous stream of decisions, and one can decide at every moment what to do and how to spend your valuable -and limited- time on this earth.

If you have a soul-destroying job that gives you zero satisfaction, or the only reward you get is a paycheck, then I can imagine you need a “scape” from this dreadful job. You need a check -in, check out card and when the time comes to check-out you basically numb yourself out of it. You go home, have dinner, play with your kids, watch TV, read the news, go for a drink…. you do all the things people do when you have some “free time”. No wonder why Sundays are so scary to most people. You come from the wonderful free weekend time, spent on hobbies, family and leisure… back to the draining week routine of the 9 to 5.

But let´s imagine for a moment, that work-life balance would not exist. Let’s assume you enjoy and have passion for what you do. How would your life look like? Would you still want to work on your life project only limited hours? Would you still fear the Sunday evenings?

I imagine a world without work-life balance like this: You wake up every morning cheerfully and full of energy, because you know it is another day you will work on what you consider your life-duty. You don’t need specific hours to start or to end. You merge your family time, your leisure time, sport time and work time into one harmonic life-event. There are no week- days and week-ends, just days. And when it comes to perform your job, you enjoy it so much that you could even think this is really your hobby time. There is no work-life balance needed, there is just life.

Now let´s imagine you have no such thing as work-life balance, and you don´t really love what you do, but you do it for a paycheck. You are obliged to work endless hours in exchange of some coins. Isn´t that a form of slavery anyway? No wonder industries had to come up with something smart as work-life balance to give some incentives for people to take such jobs.

If you are a parent, you might agree with me, that our parent job is a 24-hour duty. As a parent, there is no fixed schedule to follow. Raising kids is a life-long shift, 24 hours a day, every single day. There are no holidays, no paychecks, no rewards, and no visible material benefit. So why on earth do you decide to become a parent?

We do it because of Love. Love is our metaphysical metric. Love is something you cannot quantify as a material value (at least, not yet) and try to obtain a benefit from. It is a life- giving energy. We are parents because we commit and decide to bring offspring to the world to love them and take care of them; because is also a way to leave a mark in the world. Every person wants to leave a legacy whether with his work or his descendance… or both!

I want to live in a world where work (i.e the action of doing, creating…) becomes my primary reason of living. Why do I want to live for, if it is not to pursue some meaningful and creative work that fulfills my soul? Whether I decide to become a successful business woman, a mom and home administrator, a writer, a painter, a cooker, a plumber, or a teacher. I don’t want to be afraid to be labelled as “workaholic” or “not caring about my family” because I spend more than the “standard” 8 hours a day in my work.

When I stayed home to take care of my kids and was looking after them day and night, nobody called me a “momaholic”, but if I decided to stay a few hours more working on a personal or business project, I was suddenly a workaholic. Like if being a mom is not really a job and everything else that produces something is.What a joke!

Everybody that has a dream, and has enough work-ethic to follow it, will find the way to pursue his or her life integrating everything that is important for them.

I consider my life as a daily 24- hour mission. In this mission, I schedule work, family, exercise and everything that makes my life complete. I don’t believe in separating work and life. I believe in a complete, integrated, fulfilling life where you do meaningful activities that are in line with your center, with your heart. Life doesn’t need to be easy, but definitely needs to be worth living.

It is a God given right. Work-life balance is in my opinion, a deception invented by big industries as a way to keep people productive and a little bit happier in what we know is normally a soulless dreadful factory, a boring office job.

Don’t aspire just to have a work-life mediocre balance. Aspire for more!  Aspire to take back your whole life, aspire to be a whole person, and not just the half!

It’s in responsibility that most people find the meaning that sustains them through life. It’s not happiness. It’s not impulsive pleasure”. – Jordan Petersen
